Let's go to Mars!

NASA aims to send humans to the Red Planet of Mars within the next 20 years. Work is already under way to make the mission possible. Orbiters, landers, and rovers have been sent for several decades already to help us better understand the planet’s atmosphere, radiation levels, and more that might impact the safety of future astronauts. (Plus, Matt Damon spent a long time up there growing potatoes – kidding, that was a movie).

The Mars 2020 rover mission will study the availability of oxygen and other resources. At the same time, NASA will begin proving its capabilities with crewed missions and spacewalks near the moon, before moving to the next target — Mars. The goal is by 2030 conduct a yearlong mission with astronauts living in deep space and validating the program’s readiness to support life and work on the Red Planet. As NASA observed on its site: “Mars is the next tangible frontier for human exploration, and it's an achievable goal. There are challenges to pioneering Mars, but we know they are solvable. We are well on our way to getting there, landing there, and living there.”
