Anxious Animals

In the vast tapestry of the animal kingdom, emotions are not exclusive to humans. Anxiety, a feeling all too familiar to many of us, is also experienced by various animals, from our domesticated companions to wild creatures. Elephants, for instance, exhibit clear signs of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), especially when exposed to traumatic events such as witnessing the poaching of their kin. These gentle giants, known for their deep familial bonds, can even suffer from nightmares after such harrowing experiences. Their reactions underscore the profound emotional depth and consciousness that animals possess.

Chimpanzees, our closest evolutionary relatives, are no strangers to anxiety either. Rescued chimps, especially those who have endured the confines and stresses of biomedical labs, often display symptoms akin to human anxiety disorders. Some resort to self-harm, while others seek comfort in objects, reminiscent of human coping mechanisms. Dogs, too, wear their emotions on their sleeves. Their expressive eyes and body language often reveal feelings of worry, especially in unfamiliar or stressful situations. A simple visit to the vet, separation from their human companions, or a change in their environment can trigger visible distress in these loyal animals.

Yet, it's essential to recognize that while animals experience anxiety, their emotional landscape is not a mirror image of ours. Their fears, worries, and coping strategies are shaped by their unique experiences, instincts, and environments. However, the undeniable fact remains: animals, like humans, are sentient beings capable of a wide range of emotions. Recognizing and respecting their emotional depth is not just a matter of empathy but also a responsibility. As stewards of the planet, it's our duty to ensure that animals, whether in the wild or under human care, live lives free from undue stress and anxiety.

What's the difference between nervousness and anxiety?

There are a few key differences between nervousness and anxiety, although they're often confused. So, how can you tell which one you're dealing with? Well, for starters, nervousness is an intermittent discomfort, and it can be good for you. Anxiety, on the other hand, is a chronic issue that can interfere with your daily life. Pitching to a potential client or meeting up with a friend you had a falling out with? It's natural to be a little nervous, with a dry mouth, sweaty hands, or even a slightly upset stomach. The nervousness will leave the building soon enough. Anxiety sticks around and is not limited to a specific situation. The dread in the pit of your stomach doesn't magically disappear the moment you complete a particular challenge, which can lead to poor coping mechanisms that impact your quality of life. You may need therapy or medication if you're diagnosed with anxiety.
