Where did "acting like a Karen" come from?
The term "Karen" sparked in popularity in 2020 right after Facebook blew up and destroyed the phrase "ok, boomer." While it might seem like a natural evolution, there's more to the story. Much of it started in 2017 with the term "Becky." Merriam-Webster defines a Becky as "a white woman who is ignorant of both her privilege and her prejudice." A Karen, according to The Root, is "a graduated Becky who's extremely aware of her privilege and weaponizes it." Does this mean every woman who's named Karen is inherently awful? Absolutely not. Should you be offended if someone calls you a Karen? Maybe. Then again, it might be worth taking a deep breath and checking in on yourself. Are you being overly hostile? Go for a walk. Read something on The Root. At the end of the day, we're living on a rock hurtling through space and time at incomprehensible speeds, and no matter what, we're all going to be inconvenienced from time to time. Deal with it.
