History lesson
Before White Zombie (1932) introduced the term “zombie” to the big screen, early films like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) explored similar unsettling themes. Directed by Robert Wiene, this German Expressionist masterpiece tells the story of a hypnotist, Dr. Caligari, who uses mind control to turn a sleepwalker named Cesare into his unwitting pawn. The imagery of Cesare, moving lifelessly under Caligari’s control, is eerily reminiscent of the zombie archetype introduced later in White Zombie.
Both films delve into the concept of loss of autonomy—a core fear that resonates deeply in horror. In The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Cesare’s trance-like state captures the eerie helplessness of mind control, while White Zombie takes it a step further by linking this fear to the supernatural, drawing from Haitian Vodou traditions.
Together, these films reflect the evolving fears of their eras. While Caligari explored post-World War I anxieties about authority and control, White Zombie tapped into exoticized fears of cultural “otherness” and the unknown. Both, however, contributed to the cinematic language of horror, influencing generations of filmmakers who continue to redefine the zombie genre.
It’s fascinating how these early works, seemingly worlds apart, converge to shape the horror stories we love today!

Did you know?
Here’s a twist worthy of The Walking Dead itself: the comic series was greenlit under a fake premise involving aliens! When creator Robert Kirkman pitched the series to Image Comics, he was met with skepticism. The publisher worried that a zombie story wouldn’t have staying power, as the genre had often been seen as niche.
To sell the idea, Kirkman concocted a wild twist—he claimed that the zombie apocalypse in The Walking Dead would eventually be revealed to have been caused by aliens. According to Kirkman, these aliens would use the zombies to weaken Earth’s defenses, making it ripe for invasion. This pitch worked, and Image Comics approved the series.
Of course, Kirkman had no intention of including aliens, and as the comic grew in popularity, the publisher didn’t mind the fib. The success of The Walking Dead proved that the zombie genre could deliver gripping, character-driven storytelling without any extraterrestrial plot twists. It’s a funny piece of trivia that highlights how close we were to a very different version of the apocalypse!
