What do you think of when you read “February 14?” Cupid? Pink arrows? Colorful candy with “will U be mine” or other awkwardly spelled short, romantic phrases engraved on it? An abundance of red roses? Marriage proposals or broken hearts? Valentine's day is a day rife with cliche and consumerism. Yet whether you have someone for a Valentine this year or not, you can still enjoy this quiz exploring the sometimes dark, twisted history of this holiday.
As a child, Eloise enjoyed learning everything she could about many subjects, though in those days the best resource was her grandma’s old stack of encyclopedias. Today, Eloise still likes to know a bit about everything, and when she’s not researching information for her Facty.com posts or flexing her history degree, she’s going through the quizzes of other authors on the site - because this is where the facts are found! Visitors to our site turn to Eloise’s fun and factual articles to learn about all kinds of things, from do-it-yourself ideas to the wider world. Those who prefer to get their facts in article format can find Eloise all across the web, as well. Not only is it great to learn from her interesting posts, but most people want to become friends with Eloise after they read her stuff - she’s just so good at explaining things!
Daniel Chase created the first conversation hearts after devising a machine to press food dye letters onto the candy lozenges his brother made famous in the 1860s.
The NECCO company, since then, has changed the shape of the candy (to hearts from horseshoes, baseballs, and watches), made them smaller, and added Sweethearts® En Español. The company also abandons and rolls out new sayings yearly.
Original mottoes still in the mix include “BE MINE,” “KISS ME,” and—of course—”SWEET TALK.” In 1997 “TRUE LOVE” was resurrected from the early 1900s to celebrate the company’s 150th anniversary. More recent additions include “HONEY BUN,” “COOL CAT,” “#1 FAN,” “WHIZ KID,” “DIVA,” and “URA QT.”
