October wears a lot of hats—and most of them are either pointy, wide-brimmed, or hiding candy. But beneath the plastic skeletons and cinnamon-scented hay bales, it’s a month with serious personality. It’s when revolutions ignite, when Nobel dreams come true, and when postseason baseball takes over TVs and barstools across the country. School is in full swing, Halloween is circling the calendar, and the trees are showing off like it’s a final audition for autumn.
This is the season when ancient Celtic festivals blur into modern masked mayhem. When meteor showers streak across crisp skies, and horror franchises crawl out of the shadows. World history has a few scars with October dates on them, but so does pop culture—this is the month when genre-bending albums drop, haunted mansions open, and a surprising number of famous figures blow out birthday candles between scares.
History lesson
On October 14, 1888, in a quiet garden in Leeds, England, Louis Le Prince filmed what is now considered the earliest surviving motion picture. The film, titled Roundhay Garden Scene, is just 2.11 seconds long, capturing four people—Adolphe Le Prince, Sarah Whitley, Joseph Whitley, and Harriet Hartley—strolling in a small circle in a courtyard. There’s no sound, no plot, and no edits. But this tiny flicker of life in motion marked the birth of cinema.
Le Prince used a single-lens camera of his own invention and shot the footage on paper film at 12 frames per second—a remarkable technical achievement for the time. Though his name is far less recognized than Thomas Edison or the Lumière brothers, Le Prince’s work predates them all. Tragically, just two years later, he vanished under mysterious circumstances while preparing for a public demonstration in the U.S.—a disappearance that has fed conspiracy theories for over a century.
Today, Roundhay Garden Scene is archived and viewable online. It’s short, silent, and unremarkable on the surface—but it’s the shaky foundation of everything that came after: silent films, Hollywood blockbusters, viral TikToks. One revolution began with four people walking in a circle.

Did you know Nevada became a U.S. state on October 31, 1864—just in time to help reelect Abraham Lincoln? With the Civil War still raging, the Union needed more loyal-state votes. Nevada’s entire state constitution was wired to Washington by telegram, making it the longest telegraph message ever sent at the time. Spooky season meets strategic politics.
