How a War Stopped in a Train Car

On November 11, 1918, just after 5 a.m., a group of weary men gathered in a railway carriage tucked into the forest of Compiègne, France. By 11 a.m., the deal they signed—known as the Armistice of Compiègne—would bring World War I to a close. The timing was deliberate: the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. When the clock struck, celebrations broke out from Paris to New York. People danced in the streets, hugged strangers, and rang every bell they could find. It was a moment of global exhale.

The carriage itself would become oddly famous—used again by Hitler in 1940 when Germany forced France to surrender in that very same spot. But in 1918, it symbolized hope. The day eventually became known as Armistice Day, later renamed Veterans Day in the U.S., and it’s still marked with parades, poppies, and moments of silence.

Pardon Me, Mr. President

The tradition of pardoning a Thanksgiving turkey might feel timeless, but it didn’t officially begin until 1989, when President George H.W. Bush granted a ceremonial reprieve to a bird named “Tom.” The idea had been floated before—President Kennedy famously spared one in 1963, saying, “Let’s just keep him,” and Reagan joked about pardons in the 80s—but it was Bush who made it a full-blown tradition. Since then, turkeys have strutted through photo ops, received names, and even been sent to live out their post-White House lives at petting zoos and university farms.
