History Lesson

The Rise and Pause, and Ai Yazawa’s Nana

When Nana debuted in Cookie magazine in 2000, it redefined what josei manga could be. Ai Yazawa had already found success with titles like Paradise Kiss and Gokinjo Monogatari, but Nana struck a deeper, darker chord. Its split focus on two young women navigating love, ambition, friendship, and self-destruction in Tokyo gave readers something rare: a story that was both emotionally raw and stylishly grounded.

The manga became a commercial and critical success. With its sharp art, punk-meets-fashion tone, and emotionally tangled relationships, Nana resonated with an audience that didn’t see their messy twenties reflected in other series. It wasn’t just popular in Japan—Nana developed an international following, helped by a 2006 anime adaptation, two live-action films, and a flood of licensed merchandise. By 2009, it had sold over 22 million copies in Japan alone.

Then it stopped. In 2009, Ai Yazawa was hospitalized for a serious illness, and Nana went on indefinite hiatus. While she later recovered, the series has never resumed serialization. Readers continue to revisit it, theorize over its ending, and feel connected to characters who remain frozen in time.

Did you know?

Trapnest Means Bug Trap

The band name “Trapnest” might sound sleek and mysterious, but it’s actually a literal Japanese-English phrase—used on pest control products. In Japan, “trap nest” commonly appears on packaging for insect bait and glue traps. Ai Yazawa likely pulled the name from this real-world context, giving it a double meaning: a beautiful lure that hides something sticky underneath. It’s a fitting metaphor for the band’s polished image and the emotional consequences that come with getting too close.
