May is one of those months that pretends to be chill—flowers blooming, brunches happening, warm breezes rolling in—but look closer, and it’s doing the absolute most. It’s a month of revolutions and graduations, moon speeches and sci-fi memes, protests, parties, and pollen. In the span of 31 days, we go from celebrating labor rights to lightsabers to Mom.
This quiz is your guided sprint through May’s greatest hits—some famous, some weird, and some you’ve probably never heard of. Think you know the month that sneaks in with flowers and leaves with fireworks? Let’s find out.
History Lesson
Blame the Romans. When Julius Caesar revamped the calendar, he wanted a system that didn’t rely on seasonal guesswork and vibes. So in 45 BCE, he introduced the Julian calendar, giving months a set number of days to add up to 365. Some got 30. Others—like May—got 31. Why? Because the month before (April) had 30, and the Romans liked to keep things tidy.
May was named after Maia, a Roman goddess of growth and fertility, so giving her a longer month may have been symbolic too. Later, when Augustus came along and wanted his own month (August) to have 31 days like Julius Caesar’s July, the calendar was reshuffled—but May stayed untouched. That’s why you get one extra day of spring chaos.

Did you know?
The phrase “May the Fourth Be With You” wasn’t cooked up in a marketing meeting—it started as a cheeky newspaper ad. On May 4, 1979, the day after Margaret Thatcher was elected Prime Minister, her political party took out a message in the Evening News that read: “May the Fourth Be with You, Maggie. Congratulations.”
Over the years, the line kept popping up—in a 1988 episode of Count Duckula, in a 1994 UK Parliament debate, even in The Science of Star Wars by Jeanne Cavelos in 1999. But it wasn’t until the early 2000s, when fans started creating Facebook groups and hosting events, that May 4th became a full-on fandom holiday. Now? It’s got screenings, merch drops, and enough memes to fill the Death Star.
All from a joke in a newspaper.
