The Ides, the Equinox, and the Unexpected

If history has taught us anything, it’s that March doesn’t do boring. For thousands of years, this month has been at the center of major turning points—some planned, some purely by chance. Ancient rulers feared it (Beware the Ides of March!), scientists made discoveries that redefined the universe, and moments of pure luck changed the course of history forever.

One of the most infamous dates in history, March 15, became a lasting symbol of betrayal after Julius Caesar was warned—and promptly ignored—the prophecy about his downfall. Meanwhile, the spring equinox, a celestial balancing act of light and darkness, has been celebrated for centuries, marking the shift between seasons and the start of new beginnings.

But March isn’t just about famous warnings and planetary alignment—it’s full of unexpected events that no one saw coming. A game-changing invention, an unpredictable sports upset, or a revolutionary idea that reshaped the world—March has a habit of being the month where history takes a sharp turn. Maybe it’s the restless energy of the changing seasons, or maybe it’s just the universe keeping things interesting.

Either way, one thing is clear—March never plays by the rules.

Did you know?

The unluckiest day in history falls in March

March 15 might be the most cursed date in history—and it all started with Julius Caesar. In 44 BCE, the Roman ruler ignored a warning to “Beware the Ides of March,” only to be betrayed by his closest allies on that very day. Since then, March 15 has carried a reputation for bad luck, misfortune, and unexpected disasters.

But Caesar wasn’t the only one to have a rough Ides of March. In 1783, the day nearly toppled the U.S. government when a group of disgruntled Revolutionary War officers plotted to overthrow Congress in what became known as the Newburgh Conspiracy.

Even in modern times, March 15 has been linked to stock market crashes, deadly storms, and major corporate failures. In 2008, the Bear Stearns collapse on March 15 sent shockwaves through Wall Street, triggering the financial crisis that would soon spiral into a global recession. In 2019, Cyclone Idai made landfall on March 15, becoming one of the deadliest storms to ever hit Africa, devastating Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Malawi. On the same date in 2020, global markets suffered a historic plunge as COVID-19 lockdowns spread worldwide, marking one of the worst trading days in history.

Coincidence? Maybe. But if history has taught us anything, it’s that March 15 is a day to watch your back.
