How Much Do You Know About August?

A blackboard sign framed by pink and white flowers reads “HELLO AUGUST”—a nod to August’s blend of summer warmth and quietly historic moments, from iconic festivals to meteor showers.

August always feels like the Sunday of summer. It’s hot, hazy, and somewhere between a vacation and a countdown. But don’t let that fool you—August isn’t filler. It’s jam-packed with weird traditions, wild achievements, and moments that genuinely shaped the world. This is the month where the Voting Rights Amendment was certified. Where Woodstock kicked off. Where Voyager left Earth. Where a corn dog changed state fair snack history forever.

Sure, it doesn’t have a major holiday. But it does have meteor showers, music milestones, ancient volcanic eruptions, and political conventions held under peak air-conditioning. It’s a month of contradictions: lazy and loud, blazing and bizarre.

So, how well do you know the month that quietly does the most? Let’s find out.

History lesson

The Berlin Wall Goes Up

In the early hours of August 13, 1961, East German troops and workers moved swiftly through Berlin, laying barbed wire and erecting checkpoints.

By dawn, streets once crossed freely were sealed off. Families woke up on opposite sides of a wall that didn’t exist the day before.

The Soviet-backed German Democratic Republic claimed the barrier was meant to stop “fascists” from entering East Berlin, but its real purpose was to halt the growing exodus of East Germans fleeing to the West.

Nearly 3.5 million people had left by that point—over one-fifth of East Germany’s population—and leaders feared the brain drain.

Within days, concrete began replacing wire. Over time, the Berlin Wall would grow into a heavily fortified, 96-mile barrier complete with guard towers, trenches, and a kill zone.

It became the defining symbol of Cold War division—freedom on one side, repression on the other.

For 28 years, escape attempts ranged from homemade hot air balloons to tunneling and swimming under cover of night. At least 140 people died trying to cross.

The Lincoln Memorial took a direct lightning hit in August 2011

During a late-summer thunderstorm, a bolt cracked the steps beneath the monument and caused visible structural damage. While tourists were cleared from the site and repairs took nearly a week, the statue of Lincoln remained completely unscathed—calm, stoic, and still seated in marble. Turns out, Honest Abe can weather a storm.
