How France Lost 10 Days: The 1582 Calendar Shift

In 1582, France made a dramatic shift in how it measured time by adopting the Gregorian calendar, replacing the old Julian calendar that had been in use since Roman times. This wasn’t just a minor adjustment—France had to skip 10 entire days to realign its calendar with the solar year. People went to bed on December 9, 1582, and woke up on December 20, causing widespread confusion and, in some cases, outright resistance.

The change was ordered by Pope Gregory XIII to fix a miscalculation in the Julian calendar, which had slowly drifted out of sync with the seasons. Without the reform, major holidays like Easter were moving further away from their intended dates. While Catholic nations like France, Spain, and Italy quickly adopted the change, Protestant and Orthodox countries resisted for years, with England and its colonies holding out until 1752 and Russia waiting until 1918.

The shift also had an unexpected side effect—April Fools’ Day. Before the reform, New Year’s was traditionally celebrated in late March or early April. Some people, unaware of or resistant to the new calendar, continued celebrating the old date. They became the butt of jokes, leading to a tradition of pranks that has lasted centuries.

There Wasn't a Way for Yuri Gagarin to Land Safely

When Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space on April 12, 1961, his mission was a groundbreaking success—but there was one major problem: his spacecraft had no way to land safely. The Vostok 1 capsule was designed for space travel, not for a smooth return to Earth.

Instead of landing inside the capsule, Gagarin had to eject at 23,000 feet (7,000 meters) above ground and parachute down separately. While this worked, it caused an issue—the FAI (International Aeronautical Federation) required a pilot to land with their craft for a flight to be considered official. To avoid controversy, the Soviet Union kept this part of the mission quiet for years. Despite the unusual landing, Gagarin’s journey into space remains one of the most celebrated achievements in history.
