Trading an NFL team for a song...

The Dallas NFL franchise came into existence thanks to actions taken by the new American Football League (AFL). Before 1960, there were no pro football teams in Texas. The AFL moved first, putting franchises in Dallas and Houston. The NFL wanted to counter by putting a new franchise in Dallas. But the owner of the Washington franchise, George Preston Marshall, didn't want a team in Dallas or anywhere in the south. Washington had been considered the NFL's team in Dixie since 1937. The would-be owners of the Dallas franchise knew Marshall would put up a fight and could block their franchise. Here's how they stopped Marshall. The Washington team had a fight song, "Hail to the Redskins," which was immensely popular in Washington. So, the proposed Dallas owners bought the publishing rights to the song and told Marshall he couldn't play it at his home games or anywhere else. That changed Marshall's tune, so to speak, and the Dallas Cowboys were born.
