Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson Thought The Acting Was Tough
Dwayne Johnson is very adapted to doing live-action films. But as far as animated films go, he hasn’t done as many as you’d think. In fact, he thinks acting in animated films is one of the hardest acting jobs in the world! He claims that voice-acting is the most difficult career in acting, and is personally annoyed by celebrities being cast in animated films despite their bad delivery in voicing their characters. Whenever he was told that he would play Maui in the film, he was a little scared. He loved the directors of the movie, like Aladdin and The Little Mermaid were family favorites with Aladdin being one of The Rock’s favorite Disney movies of all time. Throughout the recording, he would often ask other actors and cast members if he was doing a good job. When he watched it, he asked other voice actors if he did a good job and portrayed the character well.
He was chosen because of his background that would allow him to play a big, tough character. But also, because his mother was Samoan, the inspiration for the culture of the film. It was believed that having people that understand that culture would do a lot of good for the movie.
Another interesting thing about Maui is that every tattoo on his body was hand-drawn. It wasn’t some computer-generated magic. But like most tattoos, they were drawn by a real artist with his own hands. Speaking of those tattoos (on Maui and Tui), many of them were inspired by The Rock’s own grandfather! Much like Maui himself was inspired by! What a fun, yet self-absorbed Grandpa!
