History Lesson
Popularity isn't a modern-day phenomenon; it's been a part of human society since the dawn of civilization. In ancient times, social status was often tied to one's lineage or role in society, such as being a noble or a warrior. But it wasn’t just about power—charisma and personal deeds also played crucial roles. The Romans, for instance, held public figures in high regard if they demonstrated virtus (courage) and gravitas (seriousness), qualities that elevated their social standing and made them popular among their peers.
As we moved into the Middle Ages and then the Renaissance, popularity began to shift with the emergence of the courtly and chivalric codes. Here, popularity wasn't just about bravery in battle but also about artistry, intellect, and etiquette. The idea of the 'Renaissance man' who was well-versed in both the arts and the sciences became the new benchmark for likability. This period highlighted the importance of being a well-rounded individual, setting the stage for more nuanced forms of popularity as society became more complex.
In the modern era, technology has radically transformed how popularity is gained and understood. The rise of mass media, and later social media, created celebrities and public figures whose popularity could be measured by their number of followers and likes. This digital age has democratized popularity, allowing virtually anyone to achieve a form of celebrity through platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, where visibility is often equated with popularity, regardless of traditional status or achievements. As we navigate this ever-evolving landscape, the concept of popularity continues to morph, reflecting the values and technologies of each generation.

Charlie took to the written word like a fish takes to water. That is to say; they found themselves immersed in literature from before they were born. They've been known to tell their friends how they can still remember the passages their parents read to them when they were in utero - Emily Dickinson, Jane Austen, and a bit of Hunter S. Thompson thrown in to balance it out. Charlie keeps their feet wet, whether they're whipping up pithy one-liners to tease your brain or busy working on their second novel (the first one is available on Amazon under a pen name they refuse to disclose). You’re sure to get a kick out of giggle-worthy explanations and outrageous hints, and still come away feeling like you’ve just expanded your knowledge base.
Did you know?
Every time we meet someone new or interact with people we've known for some time, our minds are constantly working a mile a minute to decipher social cues. We parse through what they say and do, often at a subconscious level, to determine how safe they are to be around and whether they have our best interests at heart. We pick up on so-called red flags and green flags. The former refers to signs to proceed with caution, and the latter indicates that someone is non-toxic and will likely improve our lives if they become a part of it. Sometimes, the signs can be inconsistent with what we know of someone, but humans are complex and ever-changing, so it makes sense for there to be confusion and beige flags in the mix. Green flags include good relationships with friends and/or family members, respecting others' opinions and boundaries, a notable rapport with animals, and kindness to people with less power, for example.
