Here, popularity wasn't just about bravery in battle but also about artistry, intellect, and etiquette. The idea of the 'Renaissance man' who was well-versed in both the arts and the sciences became the new benchmark for likability. This period highlighted the importance of being a well-rounded individual, setting the stage for more nuanced forms of popularity as society became more complex.
In the modern era, technology has radically transformed how popularity is gained and understood. The rise of mass media, and later social media, created celebrities and public figures whose popularity could be measured by their number of followers and likes. This digital age has democratized popularity, allowing virtually anyone to achieve a form of celebrity through platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, where visibility is often equated with popularity, regardless of traditional status or achievements. Green flags include good relationships with friends and/or family members, respecting others' opinions and boundaries, a notable rapport with animals, and kindness to people with less power, for example.
