Everyone screws up. You forget a birthday, say the wrong thing, miss a big moment—and suddenly, you’re face-to-face with the awkward, uncomfortable art of apologizing. Some people go straight to “I’m sorry.” Others plan a surprise, send a long text, or cross their fingers and hope the whole thing blows over.
But whether you lead with words, try to fix the mistake, or just ask for forgiveness, the way you say sorry reveals more than you think. It shows how you handle conflict, how you value relationships, and how you move forward when things go sideways.
This quiz will help you figure out your apology style—and maybe explain why saying sorry sometimes feels so easy… or so hard.
History lesson
In 399 BCE, in ancient Athens, Socrates went on trial. The official charges were corrupting the youth and disrespecting the gods—but that wasn’t the real reason he was in trouble. Socrates had made a name for himself by wandering the city, asking people questions they couldn’t answer, and exposing the cracks in their logic. Politicians, poets, religious leaders—no one was safe. And he didn’t do it gently. He embarrassed people, challenged tradition, and refused to play along.
His Apology wasn’t an apology in the way we use the word now. It was his defense speech—where instead of backing down, he told Athens it needed people like him. He called himself a “gadfly,” stinging the city to keep it awake. He said silencing him would do more harm than good.
The jury wasn’t impressed. They found him guilty and sentenced him to death. But Socrates stood firm. No regret, no retreat. His “apology” wasn’t about saying sorry—it was about refusing to stop being himself.

In 2017, Pepsi released a commercial where Kendall Jenner handed a can of soda to a police officer during a protest—as if that could fix the tension. The ad used imagery that echoed real social justice movements, and people immediately called it tone-deaf and offensive.
Pepsi pulled the ad within 24 hours and issued an apology that said they were “trying to project a global message of unity, peace and understanding.” But they never directly named what they did wrong. It’s a perfect example of an apology that says all the words… and still says nothing.
