What do all those fancy incantations mean?

The spell incantations in the Harry Potter series derive from Latin words and phrases. Though English is a Germanic language, it has a great deal of Latin influence, so English speakers may recognize some of the root words that appear in Harry Potter's spells. The root word "levi" means "lift," and "corpus" means "body," so the spell "levicorpus" lifts a person's body into the air. "Imperium" is the Latin word for "command," so "Imperio" allows the user to command the person they are casting the spell upon. Even character names often have hidden meanings: "vol" is the Latin root for "wish" or "will," as well as the French word for "flight"; "de" can mean either "of" or "from," and "mort" means "death," so depending on how one reads it, Voldemort's name could mean "deathly will" or "flight from death."
