Bipolar disorder, formerly known as manic depression, is a mental condition that triggers significant shifts in mood, activity levels, concentration, and energy. These moods range from depressive episodes of feeling sad, indifferent, or hopeless to manic episodes of feeling irritable, elated, or extremely energetic. Some people experience hypomania, which is a less extreme form of typical mania.

Everyone who has bipolar disorder experiences a different pattern of mood changes. Shifts in mood may be rare for one person while another experiences multiple episodes each year. Some people experience less powerful emotional changes between episodes, while others may not have any.

Though bipolar disorder is a condition that affects a person for their entire life, it is manageable. This test doesn’t represent an official diagnosis. If you feel that you have bipolar disorder, visit a healthcare professional as soon as possible.

Did you know?

Mania isn’t just euphoria?

Bipolar disorder is at the center of a lot of misinformation and misunderstandings. One of the big myths that many people continue to believe is that mania only causes euphoria, which is an extreme feeling of bliss or happiness. While euphoria is one potential effect of a manic episode, not everyone experiences it. Many people instead have periods of extreme agitation, irritation, or restlessness. Some individuals even feel extreme stress and dysphoria during their manic episodes.
