How scientists discovered the three-color vision in humans

Trichromacy is a word used to describe normal color vision. People with trichromacy can see three main colors: red, green, and blue. These colors mix together in our eyes to help us see all the colors around us. Most people have trichromacy, but some people have color vision problems called color blindness.

To find out if you have trichromacy, doctors use a color vision test. One common test is called the Ishihara test. In this test, you look at a series of pictures made up of colored dots. Each picture has a number or shape hidden inside it. If you can see the numbers or shapes, you most likely have normal color vision. If you cannot see them, you might have a type of color blindness.

You can take these tests at an eye doctor’s office. Sometimes, there are simple versions online, but a real test from a doctor is more accurate. If you are worried about your color vision, talk to an eye doctor. They can help you find out if you have trichromacy or if you see colors differently.

Did you know?

Most people see the world in three colors

Most humans see the world in three primary colors thanks to trichromacy. This means our eyes have three types of cone cells, each sensitive to red, green, or blue light. You can test for trichromacy using special color vision tests, like Ishihara plates, which reveal if someone has difficulty seeing certain colors. People with normal trichromacy can usually distinguish a wide range of colors, while those with color vision deficiencies may see fewer shades.
