Do I Have OCD?

Everyone has heard someone claim to have OCD, usually in reference to a preoccupation with keeping things organized or clean. While it's true that these are symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder, the mental health condition is significantly more complex than most people realize. The average person repeats behaviors or has recurring, intrusive thoughts, but if these behaviors do not interfere with the individual's life, it is unlikely they have OCD. Those with OCD do not enjoy these behaviors but feel a compulsion to do them regardless.

Do you have ritualistic behaviors that you repeat regularly? Do you feel anxiety when you do not perform this ritual? Do you constantly worry about germs and diseases? Do you have a family history of OCD? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, there is a chance that you have OCD. Answer the questions in this quiz as honestly as you can to find out if you have OCD. Remember, this is not a substitute for a proper diagnosis from a mental health professional; please speak with a doctor if you believe that you have OCD or any other mental health disorder.

What is Obessive-Compulsive Disorder?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is an anxiety disorder with two key symptoms: obsessions and compulsions. Think of obsessions as recurring, intrusive ideas or sensations that constantly invade a person’s thought processes. The individual often feels as though they cannot control them. Most people with OCD find these thoughts disturbing and realize that they do not make much sense. For OCD specifically, an obsession is time-consuming and can interfere with other aspects of a person’s life. Compulsions are generally more physical than obsessions. They are the repetitive behaviors and thoughts that a person uses to try and counter their obsessions. While most people with OCD realize acting on these compulsions is only a temporary fix, they often cannot control it. One example of compulsive behavior is a person washing their hands several times an hour to resolve an obsession with germs.
