People come in all shapes and sizes. The same can be said about people's minds. Each mind is as unique as the body it sits within. Some people tend to lean heavily toward prosocial traits like empathy and compassion. Others take a far more sinister outlook on the world and their fellow people. Some people naturally exhibit what's called the dark triad. These people aren't afraid to do whatever it takes to get what they want in life. Lying, cheating, or stealing is perfectly fine to them. Do you fall among those with personality traits identified by the dark triad? It's time to find out! If you've ever questioned if you lack empathy or compassion for other people, you could have a hidden dark side, and this quiz will help you find it.
Life lesson
Maintaining a relationship with someone who exhibits Dark Triad traits can be particularly challenging. These individuals may struggle to sustain long-term relationships, not just romantically but also with friends, family, and colleagues. They often exhibit a pattern of exploiting close relationships, leaving a trail of unsuccessful interactions where they've "cut off" significant people in their lives. Their stories and life details may be inconsistent, and they may display a chronic need to be fulfilled at the expense of those around them.
The relationship dynamics with a Dark Triad individual often involve manipulation, where the person continuously seeks fulfillment, leaving partners feeling emotionally, physically, or financially depleted. When faced with challenges, they may quickly turn the tables to become the victim, engaging in what's known as the narcissist cycle of abuse and gaslighting.
Experts strongly advise against forming relationships with individuals showing these traits due to the inherent risks and challenges. Dark Triad personality traits are deeply ingrained and highly resistant to change, making any hope for a positive transformation minimal. The best strategy for dealing with such individuals, as recommended by psychotherapist Paul Hokemeyer, Ph.D., is to distance oneself as quickly as possible to avoid exploitation and harm.
If you find yourself in a relationship with someone exhibiting Dark Triad traits and are unsure how to proceed, or if distancing yourself is not immediately feasible, seeking help from a therapist or counselor is crucial for support and guidance.

Charlie took to the written word like a fish takes to water. That is to say; they found themselves immersed in literature from before they were born. They've been known to tell their friends how they can still remember the passages their parents read to them when they were in utero - Emily Dickinson, Jane Austen, and a bit of Hunter S. Thompson thrown in to balance it out. Charlie keeps their feet wet, whether they're whipping up pithy one-liners to tease your brain or busy working on their second novel (the first one is available on Amazon under a pen name they refuse to disclose). You’re sure to get a kick out of giggle-worthy explanations and outrageous hints, and still come away feeling like you’ve just expanded your knowledge base.
Did you know?
Named in 2002 by researchers Delroy L. Paulhus and Kevin M. Williams, the dark triad refers to three negative personality traits that some people exhibit. Narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy all lend themselves to people being manipulative or overly callous to get what they want. They're often seen in people who cannot empathize, and people with dark triad personalities tend to do whatever is necessary to get what they want. Narcissists typically regard themselves above everyone else and, the most extreme, believe that they deserve only the best of everything, whether they've earned it or not. Machiavellians typically believe that lying and manipulation are means to an end, and if other people get hurt on their journey to their goals, it's an acceptable price to pay. Psychopaths lack empathy and remorse, enabling them to act without any guilt. Some people have two or all three of these traits.
