Anyone who has attended a football game, or watched a game on television, or listened to a game on the radio, has heard the term pigskin used to describe the football. It's become a universal term. In fact, there's no proof that any footballs were ever made with pigskin. There's a possibility that some of the first footballs ever made, back in the 1860s, might have been made from pigskin. But there's no proof. Most experts believe then, as now, footballs were made from cowhide. The only link pigs have to the football is that early on, pig bladders were used to keep the balls inflated. That ended when someone decided to use a rubber bladder to hold the air in the ball. But don't expect to ever hear a football called the cowskin!
