History Lesson
American football, a sport that originated in the United States in the late 19th century, has a limited but growing presence outside of America. Despite being primarily associated with the US, the sport has been played in various countries worldwide, with the largest and most organized leagues in Europe and parts of Asia.
The sport has been played in Europe for several decades, with the first European American Football League (EAFL) being formed in 1979. Today, there are several organized leagues across Europe, including the British American Football Association National Leagues (BAFANL) in the UK, the German Football League (GFL) in Germany, and the Austrian Football League (AFL) in Austria. The sport has also gained popularity in other countries, such as France, Sweden, and Finland.
In Asia, American football has gained a strong following in countries such as Japan, South Korea, and China. The sport has been played in Japan for over a century, with the first recorded game being played in 1934. Today, Japan has a thriving American football culture, with the X-League being the country's premier professional league and the Rice Bowl being the national championship game.
Outside of Europe and Asia, American football has also been played in countries such as Mexico, Canada, Australia, and Brazil. In Mexico, the sport has gained popularity in recent years, with the creation of the Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional (LFA) in 2016. In Canada, the sport has been played for several decades, with the Canadian Football League (CFL) being the country's premier professional league.
Despite its limited presence outside of America, the sport has a dedicated and passionate following in many countries. The International Federation of American Football (IFAF) was created in 1998 to promote the sport globally and to support the growth of American football in countries outside of the US.
Quiz Writer
Joselyn wasn’t too keen on multiple choice in high school. She vividly remembers the first biology exam she passed by only the skin of her teeth, which dragged her overall average down into the embarrassingly low 90s (she doesn’t want to talk about it). After swearing off any high school or university courses that required multiple choice tests, Joselyn managed to get an English degree by sweet-talking her professors into offering only essay-style exams. Needless to say, this did not exactly endear her to her peers. This rocky start smoothed out in time, though, and after tumbling down a black quiz hole one day while putting off job hunting, Joselyn realized her hatred of all things a-b-or-c had faded and she actually enjoyed dreaming up new ideas for questions and dangerously correct-sounding answers. You won’t find her quizzes an easy ride, but Joselyn just wants to make sure you’re really testing your knowledge.
Did you know?
Anyone who has attended a football game, or watched a game on television, or listened to a game on the radio, has heard the term pigskin used to describe the football. It's become a universal term. Do you know how much pigskin is used to make a football? You might be surprised to learn that there is NO pigskin used in the footballs made today. In fact, there's no proof that any footballs were ever made with pigskin. There's a possibility that some of the first footballs ever made, back in the 1860s, might have been made from pigskin. But there's no proof. Most experts believe then, as now, footballs were made from cowhide. The only link pigs have to the football is that early on, pig bladders were used to keep the balls inflated. That ended when someone decided to use a rubber bladder to hold the air in the ball. But don't expect to ever hear a football called the cowskin!
