A back-to-school party started it all
DJ Kool Herc (Clive Campbell) is considered the father of hip hop. In August 1973, he and his sister hosted a back-to-school jam in their Bronx apartment building. Admission was a quarter for girls, fifty cents for guys. This neighborhood party is now recognized as the birth of the hip-hop movement because it features most of the elements used to this day. DJ Kool Herc is the first to use multiple turntables when playing music and is the first to play two copies of the same song, which allowed him to extend the musical breaks within the song. This extended break was when the most dancing happened and thus started the art of break dancing. DJ Kool Herc would speak in rhyme over the instrumental parts of songs, which developed into a standard practice by MCs worldwide. Herc's friend, Coke La Rock, handled the microphone at Herc's performances and dropped the first rap lyrics, and became the first hip-hop MC.
