Can You Outsmart This Almost-MCAT Quiz?

Illustrated anatomical organs—a heart, liver, and lungs—are held by stylized, halftone-rendered hands against a teal background, symbolizing core biology knowledge and human systems relevant to science-based testing like the MCAT.

You know more than you think you do. But the moment someone says “MCAT,” your brain wants to bolt. It’s easy to assume it’s all obscure acronyms and impossible pathways—but most of it? It’s built on ideas you already know, or almost know.

This quiz isn’t here to simulate exam day. It’s here to show you where your brain lights up when it sees biology, chemistry, and psychology in action. Some questions are easy. Some will catch you off guard. Either way, you’ll walk away smarter—and probably more confident than you expected.

When Did Doctors Start Washing Their Hands?

Not nearly soon enough.

In the mid-1800s, Hungarian physician Ignaz Semmelweis noticed something strange: women in one maternity ward were dying of childbed fever at a much higher rate than in another. The difference? One ward was staffed by doctors and med students who performed autopsies before delivering babies—often without washing their hands.

Semmelweis suggested something radical at the time: maybe they should clean up before touching patients. He introduced handwashing with a chlorinated solution, and death rates plummeted. Sounds like common sense now, but back then? His ideas were mocked, rejected, and eventually ignored. It would take decades—and Louis Pasteur’s germ theory—to convince the medical establishment that invisible microbes, not “bad air” or imbalance, were killing patients.

So if you’ve ever wondered why medicine emphasizes hygiene so much, it’s because it took far too long to get anyone to take a bar of soap seriously.
