The stats don't lie, and the picture they paint makes it clear that association football is the world's favorite sport. Soccer boasts an estimated 4 billion fans. A relatively inexpensive sport to take up, footie is played by about 250 million people in more than 200 countries. The number of FIFA World Cup viewers surpasses the Olympics, and it's not just the men who attract audiences. The 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup garnered 1.12 billion viewers. Money talks, too, with broadcasters forking out hundreds of millions of dollars to show games. Europe's top five men's leagues each have a total wage cost of at least $1.185 billion. In North America, interest in Major League Soccer continues to grow, as does an affinity for the European leagues, particularly the EPL, with its lack of a language barrier. Whether the latter is due to a love for daytime drinking is up for debate.
