General of the Armies has only been awarded to two people
The highest rank in the United States Army is the General of the Armies, which has only been awarded to George Washington and John J. Pershing. In 1976, George Washington was posthumously honored during the United States Bicentennial celebrations. John J. Pershing was awarded the title in 1919 as a personal accolade for his command of the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I. Although this honor is often referred to as a six-star general, the six-star rank has never been officially recognized by the military or Congress.
General of the Armies of the United States is senior to the five-star grade of general of the Army; however, there is no official six-star insignia. Congress specified Washington's new status of General of the Armies ranked above all other grades of the Army, past or present, to make him unambiguously the highest-ranking Army officer in 1976. Pershing's title is sometimes debated as he never wore more than four stars.
