How's your geography? Do you know where each state holds its government and does the day-to-day business of keeping things running for all of its citizens? We've put together 50 questions -- one for every state -- based around the state capitals of the United States and a few unique things about them. For instance, did you know that four of the state capitals are named after a president, and another four don't lie along an interstate highway? Some are so large that they're home to a World Series championship, while others are so small they don't even have a McDonald's! Are you confident enough in your knowledge to take our state capital quiz? See how you stack up against your friends!

Jake didn’t think he’d become a writer when he was growing up in southern Saskatchewan, Canada, but fate had another idea. After barely squeaking through grade 9 English, by the luck of the draw Jake found himself with the most inspiring literature instructor his small town had ever known, and grade 10 English changed his life! Suddenly, evenings once spent at the hockey rink were spent curled up on the couch with the best of Hemingway, Dickens, and John Grisham. A valedictorian address and English degree at the University of Regina later, Jake is proud to call Heywise his favorite place to pen informative quizzes about all his passion projects. If you’re reading a post and pick up a hint of classic English literature, you’re probably reading something by Jake - especially if you come away feeling like a slightly better person for it.

How Are State Capitals Chosen?

Every state selected its capital in a way that made the most sense to them. In some cases, cities applied from conception and have held their title ever since, while others started off as regular cities and later became the new capital for one reason or another. Some states opted for their largest city, while others chose their capital based on location and how easy it would be to get people to come there in lieu of a neighboring capital. One state even submitted two constitutions from two different state capitals, leading to a nasty, bloody skirmish between the warring sides that took the Civil War to straighten out!
