Anyone who grows up wanting to be an actor has dreams of sharing deeply personal stories with audiences to help convey a message that might otherwise go unnoticed.
This is no different for actors of color. Some who have had to overcome innumerable obstacles on the path to pave their craft.
In recent years there has been a growing rally for African Americans to have more prominent roles in Hollywood. And within the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences. Not only because the films people of color create are overlooked during award season. But also because many of these stories would go untold if not for the storytellers brave enough to share them.
We've compiled a list of 50 great black actors and actresses from all walks of life. Their bodies of work span the decades and help shape some of Hollywood's best-told stories. Can you name all of them?

Did you know that Oprah had a troubled childhood? She suffered from abuse at the hands of her family members and eventually ran away from home because of it. She became pregnant at age 14, but the baby was born prematurely and passed away. She then went to Lincoln High School and became highly successful, and was put into a program that allowed her to transfer to a more affluent school. She landed a job as a radio announcer while still in high school, and then began anchoring the news at age 19. She was successful there and then transferred to a broadcasting company in Chicago. From there, she launched her own production company, and the rest, as they say, is history.
