Quiz WriterJake, Heywise Staff

Jake didn’t think he’d become a writer when he was growing up in southern Saskatchewan, Canada, but fate had another idea. After barely squeaking through grade 9 English, by the luck of the draw Jake found himself with the most inspiring literature instructor his small town had ever known, and grade 10 English changed his life! Suddenly, evenings once spent at the hockey rink were spent curled up on the couch with the best of Hemingway, Dickens, and John Grisham. A valedictorian address and English degree at the University of Regina later, Jake is proud to call Heywise his favorite place to pen informative quizzes about all his passion projects. If you’re reading a post and pick up a hint of classic English literature, you’re probably reading something by Jake - especially if you come away feeling like a slightly better person for it.

Did you know?

Remember when going to the movies was cheap?

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter on behalf of The National Association of Theater Owners (NATO), the cost of a movie ticket in 1974 was just $1.89. By 1980 it was an average of $2.69. Over the decade, this number rose steadily by a dime or two each year. By 1989, it cost an adult $3.99 for one movie ticket. Compared to today, that is still a deal. In the ‘90s, the price stayed within the four-dollar range, but at the turn of the century, the rate of a movie ticket rose from five to nearly eight dollars within a few years.

Movie theater snacks are also at an all-time high in terms of cost. The inflation of candy, popcorn, and soda has continued to climb since the early twentieth century. However, the 1980s brought out some new candies that withstood the test of time including Skittles. Sour Patch Kids were created thanks to the Cabbage Patch Kids craze and “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” made the Reese’s Pieces a hit in the ‘80s even though they were released in the late ‘70s.
