Who is Marijuana Pepsi Vandyck?
Imagine you're sitting in class on the first day of term. The teacher calls out names when, suddenly, they stop. They don't want to say the next name on that list. Eventually, they say it: "Marijuana Pepsi?" A sweet girl, sitting at the front of the class, puts her hand up and says, "Here!" The teacher stares at her with fear and confusion. Soon after, teachers at this school begin to call the girl "Mary" instead of her full name. You can probably understand their consternation, but that doesn't mean they're right, either. That's what happened to the real Marijuana Pepsi. She was treated as an outsider by her teachers at school, but her mother told her that her name would take her around the world. When Marijuana won a school spelling bee, the school changed the name on her award certificate to Mary Jackson. Marijuana's mother was not impressed and fought with the principal to have the name changed back. Today, Marijuana is a respected educational researcher, whose PhD dissertation is titled "Black names in white classrooms: Teacher behaviors and student perceptions."
