The Ancient Chinese Philosophy of 5 Elements
In ancient China, people divided up the physical world into five categories: Wood, Fire, Water, Metal, and Earth. They then used these basic principles to determine checks and balances for health and wellness within the body. They also followed these concepts in their governments and religious practices. The idea of balancing various elements within a single body is similar to the European philosophy of the four humors: black bile, yellow bile, phlegm, and blood. Breaking down the human body into different elements gave physicians and healers all over the world insight into treating sick or injured people, long before we had the scientific and technological conveniences of today.
