When did we become obsessed with Reality TV?

Reality television has become a staple in the entertainment industry, captivating audiences worldwide with its unscripted and often unpredictable content. This genre of television programming has a rich history dating back to the 1940s, with the first reality show airing on American television in 1948.

The show was called Candid Camera and featured unsuspecting individuals being caught on camera in awkward or embarrassing situations. It quickly became a hit and set the stage for future reality shows. In the 1970s, An American Family debuted and followed the daily lives of a real family. It was groundbreaking at the time, as it was one of the first reality shows to focus on real people rather than staged situations.

The 1990s saw the rise of reality shows like Survivor and Big Brother, which put contestants in isolated environments and tested their abilities to survive and interact with one another. These shows were hugely popular and paved the way for other reality shows in the 2000s. The Real World became a hit in 1992, and it followed a group of young adults living together in a house. This show was significant because it tackled issues such as sexuality and race, which were not commonly discussed on television.

The 2000s saw the explosion of reality TV, with shows like American Idol and The Bachelor becoming household names. American Idol followed aspiring singers as they competed to become the next big music sensation, while The Bachelor featured a single man looking for love among a group of women. These shows proved to be hugely popular, with millions of viewers tuning in each week.

In recent years, reality television has continued to evolve, with shows like Keeping Up With The Kardashians and The Real Housewives dominating the airwaves. These shows focus on the lives of wealthy and influential individuals and give viewers a glimpse into their glamorous lifestyles.

Reality television has had a significant impact on popular culture and has shaped how we consume media. It has given us a window into the lives of real people and allowed us to connect with them in ways that scripted programming cannot. Reality shows have become a guilty pleasure for many, and they continue to dominate the television landscape.

Quiz WriterCharlie, Heywise Staff

Charlie took to the written word like a fish takes to water. That is to say; they found themselves immersed in literature from before they were born. They've been known to tell their friends how they can still remember the passages their parents read to them when they were in utero - Emily Dickinson, Jane Austen, and a bit of Hunter S. Thompson thrown in to balance it out. Charlie keeps their feet wet, whether they're whipping up pithy one-liners to tease your brain or busy working on their second novel (the first one is available on Amazon under a pen name they refuse to disclose). You’re sure to get a kick out of giggle-worthy explanations and outrageous hints, and still come away feeling like you’ve just expanded your knowledge base.

Did you know?

There's more to Ariana than meets the eye

You probably know Ariana as the hip, energetic bartender from Vanderpump Rules. If you didn't know her before the Scandoval started, you probably do now. With the drama surrounding Tom and Raquel's hookup, the former friends and spouses are hard to miss. Now that Ariana has broken up with Tom, there's no need to worry about her. Ariana has a background that's far more impressive than the broken-hearted divorcee that's portrayed on the show. Ariana has a top-notch education with degrees from Flagler College and the Tisch School Of The Arts. In addition to being an author, a mixologist, and a reality star, Ariana was once part of an equine training group. That's right, back home in her native Florida, she grew up riding horses. With that in mind, there's no doubt she'll be back to blazing her own trails in no time. Well, after the Scandoval finally, if ever, blows over.
