History Lesson

The Birth of the Personal Computer

The personal computer (PC) revolution began in the 1970s, long before the rivalry between Mac and Windows took off. The first true PC came in 1975 with the release of the Altair 8800. Created by Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS), the Altair wasn’t much to look at—just a box with switches and lights—but it sparked the imagination of early tech enthusiasts. It was the first computer designed for individual use, and it marked the beginning of a shift from massive corporate machines to personal desktops.

The Altair inspired innovators like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, who saw its potential to change how people interacted with technology. In 1981, IBM entered the game with its IBM PC, a powerful machine that ran Microsoft’s DOS operating system. This computer set the standard for the modern PC, with its open architecture allowing other companies to create compatible software and hardware. It wasn’t long before businesses, schools, and eventually homes began adopting PCs, transforming them from niche tools to everyday essentials.

Meanwhile, Apple introduced its own groundbreaking personal computer in 1984—the Macintosh. With its graphical user interface (GUI) and a sleek, all-in-one design, the Mac made computing accessible and even fun for the average user. This release cemented the beginnings of the now-famous rivalry between Mac and PC, as both companies vied to define what a personal computer could be.

The launch of the first PCs laid the foundation for modern computing as we know it. They were the first step in democratizing technology, paving the way for the digital world we live in today.

Did you know?

The First Computer Mouse Was Invented in 1964

The computer mouse, a tool many of us take for granted, was invented in 1964 by Douglas Engelbart and his team at the Stanford Research Institute. The original mouse looked nothing like the sleek, wireless devices we use today—it was a small, rectangular wooden box with two metal wheels underneath to track movement. Engelbart called it a “mouse” because the cord coming out of the back reminded him of a tail.

Engelbart’s mouse was part of his vision to create a more interactive relationship between people and computers. At the time, most computers were operated using punch cards or command-line inputs, which were far from intuitive. The mouse, paired with a graphical user interface (GUI), made it possible to point, click, and navigate in ways that felt natural and simple.

It wasn’t until the 1980s that the mouse became widely known, thanks to its inclusion with the Apple Lisa and later the Macintosh. Today, the mouse remains an essential part of personal computing, a testament to Engelbart’s groundbreaking vision of user-friendly technology.
