Mario had a completely different name in the beginning
Mario is a very memorable and catchy name that has been associated with the character for a long time. Not only does it have a nice ring to it, but it also plays into Mario's stereotypical Italian design. Despite all this success, Mario was not the first choice when naming the character. Due to his original appearance in Donkey Kong, he was named Jumpman because of the challenge of jumping over huge barrels thrown by the large ape-like antagonist from above. While the Nintendo Office in the US was trying to devise a better name for the American version of the game (the character was created by Shigeru Miyamoto, who originated the much loved Donkey Kong game), their landlord: Mario Segale, interrupted their meeting. After that, his name was used instead of the much less catchy Jumpman, which became wildly popular across the world.
