How beliefs in magic shaped daily life in medieval Europe
In the world of Harry Potter, people are divided into two groups: wizards (also called magical people) and Muggles (non-magical people). Wizards can use magic. They go to special schools like Hogwarts to learn spells, potions, and how to use a wand. Muggles, on the other hand, do not have any magical powers. They live normal lives and do not know much about the magical world.
Wizards and witches often keep their world a secret from Muggles. They use spells to hide magical places and creatures. For example, the entrance to the wizarding school, Hogwarts, is hidden so Muggles cannot see it. Some Muggles do find out about magic, but most never know it exists.
Some people in the Harry Potter stories are born to magical families, while others have Muggle parents but still turn out to be wizards. Hermione Granger is a good example—her parents are Muggles, but she is one of the best witches at Hogwarts. This shows that anyone in that world could be magical or non-magical, no matter who their family is.
