In 1985, three innovative creatives built a company that would go on to change animation as we know it and dramatically shift how the West views anime. Studio Ghibli films range from heartwarming comforts to absolute tearjerkers that will leave you a sobbing mess. Regardless of the subject matter, each movie has a certain magical charm that you can’t help but love. Because of this, Studio Ghibli has seen massive critical success with films like Spirited Away and cultivated cult followings with smaller movies, such as Only Yesterday.

Studio Ghibli’s dedication to quality, creativity, and empathetic storytelling means that many fans will go out of their way to watch their films just because of the Ghibli brand. However, just because you’ve seen every movie doesn’t mean that you know all there is to know about Studio Ghibli and their creative works. If you really think of yourself as a superfan, why not take this quiz and put your knowledge to the test?

Zach has been riding the gondola of trivia wherever the waters take him. Although he’s not a named consultant on any major quiz TV shows, Zach has watched them all since infancy and will happily take up any challenge whether it be pub quizzes or high-stakes matches he isn’t afraid to show up. And showing up is 90% of the work!

Did you know?

Studio Ghibli has a no-cuts policy

With all of the love and care that Studio Ghibli puts into their films, it makes sense that they wouldn’t want anyone chopping up their works in the editing room. However, the studio’s “No Cuts” policy wasn’t in place initially. In fact, the first Western adaptation of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind was heavily edited, with many characters and scenes removed entirely. They even marketed it as an entirely different genre of film. Because of this, when Miramax co-chairman Harvey Weinstein wanted to edit Princess Mononoke to better suit an American audience, Studio Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki sent him a katana with the message “No cuts.” etched into the blade.
