Fans of J.K. Rowling's series know you can't just wear any scarf or tie at themed Wizarding World events and amusement parks. Only noobs would do that. No, your outfit colors must align with your Hogwarts house, and your house depends on the characteristics you possess. There comes a time when all true Potterheads must, like the iconic characters in the books and movies, submit themselves to the sentient Sorting Hat.
During his Sorting ceremony, Harry placed the enchanted hat on his head and thought, "Not Slytherin," earning himself a place in Gryffindor in the process. Ultimately, there's something worth admiring about each house, and, as you'll soon see, some of the most awesome Muggle world celebs fall into non-Gryffindor categories.
Come along as we revisit key details about each house before sorting Chocolate Frog card-worthy stars into their Hogwarts constellations.
Before we recap various house traits, let's get one thing straight. No one is entirely good or bad, except maybe You Know Who. To inherit a particular house, one needs to display the house's core traits in varying degrees. If there's an overlap, the Sorting hat may let the individual have a say, as was the case with Harry.
This is the house everyone knows, and almost everyone wants to belong to. Home to our protagonist and his besties, Ron and Hermione, as well as the GOATS, Professors McGonagall and Dumbledore, Gryffindor represents admirable qualities such as bravery, integrity, and self-sacrifice. The founder of the house, Godric Gryffindor, was famous for his pro-equality stance and dueling prowess.
On a bad day, Gryffindors can be reckless, rebellious and stubborn, or they can have a hero complex. But these folks are never yawn-inducing, and their defiance often paves the way for positive change. Gryffindor's colors are scarlet and gold, and they have a similarly fiery element and spirit. The house's symbols include a lion and a griffin, creatures known for their courage and strength.
Before Hermione Granger, there was Rowena Ravenclaw, "the most brilliant witch of her time." Rowena wasn't close-minded, the true mark of an intelligent person, so Ravenclaws tend to be empathetic and quirky like the beloved character, Luna Lovegood. The house is associated with cleverness, independence, wit, and creativity. Ravenclaw's colors are a cool blue and bronze, and the house's element is air, denoting freedom of thought.
Members are curious individuals who value learning and truth-seeking above all else, but they can be judgy and self-important. Ravenclaw badges feature ravens or eagles, which signify insight and power derived from knowledge. Other Ravenclaw characters include the wand maker, Garrick Ollivander, and Harry's early crush, Cho Chang, a popular seeker on the Ravenclaw quidditch team.
Helga Hufflepuff was an amazing cook and herbologist and was always seen smiling in her portraits. Hufflepuffs are similarly amiable folks who embody qualities such as kindness, patience, fairness, loyalty, and hard work. They're humble witches and wizards who don't care too much about money and glory. Still, their level-headedness means they make good leaders, and many Ministers of Magic have been Hufflepuffs. The house's mascot is a badger, a creature that symbolizes grit and resilience.
The talented Cedric Diggory (played by Robert Pattinson) and bubbly Nymphadora Tonks, two important characters in the series, belong to this underrated house. The Hufflepuff colors are yellow and black. Hufflepuffs tend to be as busy as bees and can be super sweet, but they can get stung when they're too trusting. The earth element infers steadfastness.
Slytherin's colors are green and silver, and its element is water. In the early Pottermore years, being classified as Slytherin may have elicited shock and horror. After all, most of the selfish bad guys, including He Who Must Not Be Named, hail from this notorious house. But there's been a paradigm shift over time, and once sheepish Slytherins now wear their badge with honor and attach "Honk if you love Snape" stickers to their cars. That's because being a Slytherin doesn't automatically mean that someone is evil.
Yes, Salazar Slytherin wanted Hogwarts to admit only pure bloods, but he was sent packing by the other founders, and members of his house don't necessarily share his arrogant, elitist sentiments. Merlin was a Slytherin, too, and positive traits associated with this house include ambition, resourcefulness, and concomitant wealth. With a serpent as a symbol, it's easy to jump to conclusions about duplicity, poison, and cold-blooded snakes in the grass, but snakes are unfairly maligned animals.
The fact that they shed their skins means they have tremendous potential and can be a healing force. Slytherins are attracted to leadership positions, and the reality is that leaders often have to make questionable calls.
Tom Holland is a major Harry P fan, and the Spiderman star has admitted to being nervous before doing the Pottermore sorting test. The test helped him lock down the Gryffindor label, and here's why we think he deserves it despite transmitting serious Hufflepuff vibes. For one, he shot his shot with tall queen Zendaya and scored. Then there's the fact that he's secure in his masculinity and often takes on super-vulnerable roles. Playing ballet dancer Billy Elliot as a kid probably wasn't the easiest thing to do, but Tom powered on, and today, he's firmly on the A-list.
When asked by a fan to sort BTS's members into Hogwarts houses, RM placed himself and Jin into Gryffindor. And we can't argue with his decision. RM is an excellent leader, and as the K-pop band's frontman, he's had to almost singlehandedly navigate the daunting task of publicity in English, a language he learned partly from watching the sitcom Friends. RM's MBTI personality type is ENFP, "The Champion." That sounds about right.
There's little public info about whether Chappell Roan's been sorted into a Hogwarts house, but we're pretty sure she's a Gryffindor. From her daring lyrics and unabashed celebration of her queerness to her courageous criticism of the Biden administration's support for the war in Gaza, this is someone who is not afraid to ruffle feathers while being a "femininomenon." Recently, Chappell also bravely called out predatory superfan behavior and drew boundaries after uncomfortable nonconsensual physical and social interactions with strangers.
Taylor Swift epitomizes ambition and astuteness. A marketing savant who's made strategic career choices, including self-publishing the Eras Tour book, battling for her masters, and generally being a billionaire boss, the world's biggest pop star commands the respect of her peers and has legions of fans who can single-handedly affect the local economy in cities where her concerts take place, dance enough to cause seismic activity, and happily hand over their dollars.
In the wake of various media scandals, including one involving Kanye West, who accused her of lying, Ms. Swift took ownership of the serpent symbol and revenge narrative and plastered it all over her Reputation album. She's as good an example as any for how to bid the past farewell and reinvent yourself for tomorrow, and that's the most snake-like quality of them all.
Kim K is a Slytherin, through and through. She has acquired cultural cachet, riches, and power through sheer force of will and charisma. Her beauty, while considerable, is not the reason she has remained relevant for close to two decades. Kim's success comes down to a keen business acumen, resourcefulness, and a commendable work ethic. And yes, there may be an entertaining dose of narcissism in the mix and a bullying streak evident in, for example, well-documented feuds with her sister Kourtney and Taylor Swift, but Slytherins always keep you guessing about what's real and what's not. Ms. Kardashian certainly doesn't lack empathy and spends a significant chunk of her time fighting for criminal justice reform. Fifty shades of grey, indeed.
The award-winning playwright, actor, and musician did the Pottermore sorting quiz only to be called "So Slytherin." Mr. Miranda could very well have ended up in Ravenclaw, what with his smarts and creative output, but his ambition, inventiveness, and fantastic judgment make him one of the sssmiliest Slytherins out there.
The South African multi-hyphenate has something of a rags-to-riches story, and his immense achievements are due to his Ravenclaw qualities of wit and cleverness. The man never went to college but is more articulate than most people with a degree. He holds his own in rooms filled with big thinkers from various industries and has a lucrative Spotify deal based on being an opinion leader. Trevor is a Harry Potter fan and has equated friends with Horcruxes.
Sia is a musical genius and as original as they come. With inimitable vocals, poetic lyrics, unforgettable melodies, and a stage presence influenced by being on the autism spectrum, she is so unique. The artist shies away from the spotlight and would not be out of place in the Ravenclaw common room alongside other misfits like Luna Lovegood.
You'd be forgiven for thinking that this British legend was in the Harry Potter movies. The cast was stacked with stage and screen luminaries, and Mr Fry fits the bill. But he is, in fact, the narrator of all the Harry Potter audiobooks. Stephen has had a long and illustrious career as a performer and writer, but when he was in school, he saw rules as mere suggestions and was expelled as a result. Remember, Ravenclaws are sharp, open-minded, willful, and independent. They forge their own paths.
Like his character Newt Scamander, a Hufflepuff with a caring nature, Eddie Redmayne just looks like a trustworthy, nice guy. Ed has gone so far as to say: "For far too long now, Hufflepuffs have been victimized." He's listed the house's fine traits on record, highlighting how Hufflepuffs always strive for the greater good. The actor's reputation for being polite and friendly definitely aligns with his house.
The WWE wrestler and entrepreneur revealed his Hufflepuff status in 2016 at the MTV Movie Awards and has emphatically tweeted: "Huffpuffs in the house!" He has referred to himself as "the hardest worker in the room," which in itself qualifies him to be Helga's homie. But his generosity and good nature are the qualities that have endeared him to millions and even started whispers of a run for president. Did someone say Minister of Magic?
J Law was obsessed with the Potterverse growing up and screamed when she first met Daniel Radcliffe. Her relentless work ethic catapulted her to the upper echelons of Hollywood, but she temporarily stepped away from the limelight after concerns about oversaturation. Jennifer's jolly demeanor and down-to-earth nature set her apart from other starlets, and the actress's humility after skillful Oscar-nominated performances is noteworthy.
Think of some of the most topical celebrities today. Many don't fit neatly into any one house and are a bundle of contradictions. Take, for instance, Elon Musk. He's an immigrant who's now anti-immigration. As the force behind Tesla, SpaceX, and other ventures, his vision and determination to push boundaries exemplify Slytherin's ambition and Gryffindor's bravery. But he's also socially awkward and not smooth like a black mamba.
Then there's Rihanna
, who also checks boxes in multiple houses, including Ravenclaw, Slytherin, and Gryffindor. She couldn't care less about her haters and has risen to rarified quarters with savvy choices and bold ideas.
Hogwarts Houses serve as a fun framework rather than strict categories. They reflect personality traits but don't condemn folks to any one way of being. A Time magazine study of 500,000 quiz respondents found that the U.S. is a nation of people who mostly identify as Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs. "Hufflepuff gets the rest," the Sorting Hat once said, and so it is in such a diverse country.
Do you know which common room you'd be hanging out in and which celebrities could be your housemates? If you've done a sorting quiz before, it's worth noting that humans grow and evolve. The house you'd fit in now might not be the house you were sorted into a decade ago. So, take out your broomstick to brush away the cobwebs, reflect on your present-day values, and take our quiz. The Wizarding World stands ready to welcome you.

Her dream is to win a geriatric edition of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, and she could probably do you a solid if you were on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and needed to call a friend. Ms. Harmon is currently attempting to learn Korean at a neighborhood church to justify binging K dramas. Her tiger mom teacher remains unimpressed.
