Before becoming the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln was a wrestling champion. While growing up in New Salem, Illinois, he became known for his fighting skills and eventually won his county’s wrestling competition. He fought in approximately 300 matches and only lost once! In 1992, President Lincoln was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and was also given an “Outstanding American” award. Other presidents known for their fighting prowess include Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, Andrew Jackson, Ulysses S. Grant and George Washington, although none of them had a record or reputation quite like Abe.
